‘Best of luck’: Everton fans react as academy prospect Joe Williams joins Wigan

Wigan Athletic bolstered their ranks yesterday with the signing of Everton midfielder Joe Williams, according to the club’s official website.

The 22-year-old came through the academy ranks at Goodison Park but leaves the club on a permanent basis.

He has spent time out on loan during the last two seasons. In 2017/18 he played for Barnsley and during the last campaign, he was at Bolton Wanderers.

Williams is typically an out-and-out central midfielder, although he can also operate in a more defensive holding role.

The player might be seen as a coup to Wigan and they will hope he can propel towards Championship safety this season.

For Everton, it sees a player nurtured by the academy depart and that is naturally a little bit saddening for their supporters.

Williams never stepped up to play a first-team fixture for the Toffees. He did, however, make the bench on a handful of occasions without getting on the pitch.

Following the news of his departure, Everton fans took to Twitter to wish their former prospect well on his new permanent move.

Williams follows Antonee Robinson in switching to the DW Stadium and here is a selection of tweets from the Toffees faithful:
