Mauricio Pochettino has expanded upon Vincent Janssen’s prolonged exclusion from the Tottenham first team setup, as per Sky Sports.
Not even Spurs’ growing injury crisis in attacking areas has convinced Pochettino to hand the Dutchman a recall and he has explained the reasons why.
He said: “For the last year and a half he has not been in our plans. It is not only the manager’s plan, he is not in the club’s plan.
“The relationship between the player and club doesn’t work. We are trying to help him find a club for him where he can be happy and start to play again. Our relationship is very good. It’s not a personal problem, it’s about the professional side.”
It is rare that there is no personal falling out when a player is so far out of favour, but that appears to be the case with Janssen.
The most likely explanation is that he just cannot match the intensity of Pochettino’s training methods. But Spurs need attacking variety and it would not do them any harm to have an international goalscorer in reserve at a time when their squad is stretched to its limits.
Pochettino’s stubbornness not only robs Janssen of the opportunity to put himself in the shop window but of Tottenham of a goal-getting option they could use in the absence of Harry Kane.
