Why this is Aaron Ramsey's season for Arsenal.
With Arsenal having just finished their pre-season, beating Manchester City 3-1, which could arguably have been Aaron Ramsey’s best game; I’m hoping this blog post explains why I think this could be his season, if you disagree I’m more than happy for you to comment and we can get a little debate going.
Aaron Ramsey was tipped as a future world class player at the age of 19 before his horrific leg break against Stoke in February 2010; he was tipped to replace the magnificent Cesc Fabregas. Since the injury it has been a long and hard recovery progress; especially last season when he got a lot of stick from the Arsenal faithful. No one was sure of what Ramsey’s best position was, some saw him as a defensive midfielder, others saw him as someone who should be pushed further up the pitch just behind the striker. The pre-season has seen him become one of our main assets in the centre of the pitch; more so of a box to box midfielder; Claudio Marchisio like.
In the final game of pre-season against Manchester City in Helsinki, Aaron scored one and assisted one; this game showed how he had greatly improved. He was no longer muscled off the ball; you can tell that he has been working hard over the summer on his upper body strength. Having also improved his stamina it seems like he has been defensively sound; tracking opposing players’ runs and getting back in the box to help out when needed. Ramsey can also put in a strong tackle; but while all the positives defensively; at times when on the ball it still looks like he could be prone to losing the ball, maybe that’s just me, still worrying after his performances last season. Although it is clear you can see his defensive improvements; this doesn’t mean to say that he hasn’t improved offensively. Ramsey’s passing has improved since last season, with a better pass completion rate in the final third; having getting a couple of assists during the pre-season. Although for a midfielder passing and stamina is key; Ramsey is becoming more of a goal scorer, his goal against Manchester City was a nicely weighted ball from Theo Walcott before Ramsey rounded Joe Hart slotting in to an empty net; making good forward runs constantly through pre-season games.
Reading through peoples tweets; it is clear to see that a lot of Arsenal fans agree with me him having a great pre-season, tipping him to be a starter throughout. Some say that he has progressed past Jack Wilshere; to a degree I agree with this. Wilshere hasn’t seemed his old self this pre-season and reminds me of Aaron last season.
