Why Steven Gerrard could hand Liverpool a blow in reported Yves Bissouma pursuit - TBR View
The chances of Yves Bissouma being a Brighton player come the start of next season seem small. The African ace has been linked with numerous Premier League clubs – The Sun stating on Monday that Liverpool and Arsenal want the £40m-rated ace.
Little surprise, really. Not only has Bissouma probably been one of the best central midfielders outside of the Premier League’s top six this season, but both Liverpool and Arsenal are in need of additions in the middle of the park.
Liverpool need a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum while James Milner continues to edge closer to the end of his career – and Jordan Henderson’s injury issues mount up. Arsenal need a long-term partner for Thomas Partey.
Arsenal’s lack of European qualification means Liverpool are certainly in the driving seat for Bissouma, mostly because they will be able to offer him more game time than the Gunners. But Steven Gerrard and Rangers can hamper their Bissouma chase.
The Sun claimed over the weekend that Brighton are looking to replace Bissouma with highly-rated Reading midfielder Josh Laurent, who is rated at £8million according to The Sun. Signed last summer, Laurent played 45 of Reading’s 46 league games.
A holding midfielder, he also had a hand in six goals. Brighton believe he is the ideal replacement for Bissouma and at £8million, he boasts massive resale value. Signing Laurent, then, means Brighton will be willing to sell Bissouma.
But this is where Gerrard comes in. The report also claims that Rangers want Laurent, as they look to beef up their midfield ahead of a potential Champions League campaign. Picking Rangers or Brighton is surely an easy decision.
Rangers boast Champions League, Gerrard at the helm and the chance to win league and cup titles – while Brighton are likely to be a bottom-half Premier League table in 12 months time. So, Rangers surely stand a better chance of signing Laurent.
That could mean that Brighton miss out on their ideal replacement for Bissouma and end up delaying a sale – potentially forcing Liverpool to miss out. It might mean that Gerrard could be about to hamper Liverpool’s move for £40million man Bissouma.
