‘Why’: Some Everton fans think one of their stars is the subject of a ‘ridiculous’ decision

A number of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to criticise Ben Godfrey’s call-up to the England Under-21 squad, believing the Toffees defender should’ve made the senior team.

The 23-year-old joined Everton in October last year for a reported £25million deal, penning a five-year deal with the Blues.

Godfrey has made 25 appearances for Everton, of which 24 have been starts, and has been one of Toffees’ standout players during a mostly positive season.

The 6ft 1in ace has also shown his versatility this season, playing at centre-back, left-back and right-back under Ancelotti.

As a result, Godfrey and Everton teammate Tom Davies have been called up to the Young Lions squad, hoping to end a 37-year wait for European Championship success.

The Everton pair are in a squad which will travel to Slovenia this month for the first leg of the competition, which was originally scheduled for June last year.

However, some Evertonians strongly feel Godfrey should’ve made Gareth Southgate’s squad instead of the U21s:

England, who were undefeated in a dominant qualifying campaign, are in a group with Portugal, Croatia and Switzerland.

The top two finishers will reach the tournament’s final stages, a straight knockout set for Hungary and Slovenia between 31 May and 6 June.
