'Why on earth would we do this?': Some Liverpool fans shocked by Tuesday announcement

A number of Liverpool fans have criticised the club’s decision to allow Reds loanee Sepp van den Berg to play against his parent club on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s charges head to Preston for their Carabao Cup fourth-round clash, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Van den Berg made the temporary switch to the Lancashire outfit in January as part of the deal to bring Ben Davies to Liverpool.

The 19-year-old Reds defender then had his loan extended for the 2021-22 campaign in the summer.

7 Footballers Playing In The WRONG Position

Van den Berg has made 33 appearances to date for the Lilywhites, including 17 this season so far.

As a regular player for his current side, he’d have been a big miss against Liverpool – albeit completely understandable.

However, thanks to Liverpool’s decision, Van den Berg can now feature against the Anfield outfit.

When asked about Van den Berg’s availability on Tuesday, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Ljinders said: “Yes, of course he should play.

“It’s like, if you want to be a chef, you need to spend a lot of time in the kitchen!

“So, what would our message be if we sent our players on loan to get good games and then there’s a good game coming and not letting them play?

“We want to give young players opportunities and for Sepp it is an amazing game.

“I am in contact with him, he looks forward to it and that’s probably the most important thing.

“It’s exactly what he needed; a young centre-half who is playing in a different position but is fighting in the Championship.

“If you can come out of that league you will be ready for a lot.”

While it’s good news for Van den Berg and Preston, some Liverpool fans this decision could come back to haunt them:
