Why Newcastle should consider recalling Elias Sorensen after latest Blackpool snub

When Elias Sorensen was scoring goals for fun in Newcastle United’s academy team earlier this season, fans were making noises about him getting a senior call-up.

Rafa Benitez was reluctant to bring in an unproven youth player during a relegation battle, though, and instead decided to loan him out.

This seemed like the most sensible option but his start to life as a Blackpool player has been far from successful.

After joining Blackpool on loan in January, Sorensen has managed just one substitute cameo of 32 minutes.

And last weekend, he was snubbed for a place in the match day squad, despite travelling down to London with the squad.

It might be too early for Newcastle to consider recalling the Denmark youth international but the idea will be in their mind.

After scoring 16 goals in 19 Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy games for Newcastle’s under-23 squad, the 19-year-old needs to be playing regularly to develop.

Sorensen is clearly a talent for the future and a potential Newcastle star in years to come.

But this is a vital stage of his career and he needs to be getting game time under his belt to aid his development.

If Blackpool cannot offer him that, then he is better off continuing to score goals in Newcastle’s youth team.
