Why Liverpool risk getting themselves in a position of ‘absolute turmoil’

Liverpool have got their season off to a solid start, winning five of their six games in all competitions so far in 2024/25.

The Reds did stumble in their shock defeat to Nottingham Forest, but they instantly made amends by winning at AC Milan and then thrashing Bournemouth.

All in all, Liverpool fans will be happy with how Arne Slot has begun his reign at Anfield after taking over from the legendary Jurgen Klopp.

However, there could be some trouble over the horizon at Liverpool, and Darren Bent has warned that the Reds are at risk of “absolute turmoil”.

Darren Bent thinks Liverpool are at risk of ‘absolute turmoil’ without Virgil van Dijk

Three of Liverpool’s main players – Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold – are out of contract at the end of the season.

Bent, speaking on talkSPORT, focused on the prospect of the Reds losing Van Dijk to a free transfer, and how damaging that would be at the back.

“If they lost Van Dijk, they would be in absolute turmoil, Liverpool, without him,” said Bent.

“I like (Jarell) Quansah, I like (Ibrahima) Konate. I think they are both very good. I like (Joe) Gomez.

“Put them together without Virgil next year, a completely different kettle of fish.”

What is the latest regarding Liverpool trio’s expiring contracts?

As things stand, there hasn’t been a breakthrough regarding Liverpool and the contracts of Van Dijk, Salah and Alexander-Arnold.

However, there have been reports from the likes of Fabrizio Romano claiming conversations are set to take place between all parties in due time.

Changes in the Liverpool dugout and boardroom have meant that long-term discussions haven’t been easy over the past nine months or so.

Now, the Reds find themselves in a difficult position, as all three players will be highly sought after and can talk to non-English clubs as of January.

Hopefully talks will start and move quickly, but as things stand, it’s understandably an anxious time for fans who want to see all players tied to the club beyond next summer.
