Chelsea have now completed another summer signing.
The Blues have already recruited Dario Essugo and Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP – both of whom are top talents – and have now added another, as Chelsea announce the arrival of Liam Delap in a £30m move from Ipswich Town.
Those at Stamford Bridge have moved swiftly for the England U21 international after he scored 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances last season.
Many would assume Ipswich Town fans are upset to lose such a talented striker in Liam Delap – although the majority online are actually pleased about his move to Chelsea.
Why Ipswich Town supporters are “over the moon” about Liam Delap to Chelsea
The transfer window only officially opened on Sunday, and the Portman Road faithful are just glad this deal was done quickly, rather than it becoming a prolonged saga which eats into the summer.
Firstly, one Ipswich Town fan wrote on X (previously known as Twitter): “No saga, done early in the window. Club record sale. Profit made on a player. We had a future England star. We now have further sell ons etc. Scored goals for us. Needs to keep developing and Chelsea is a great move for him.
“All round, good business.”
The Tractor Boys signed Delap from Manchester City for £20m in July 2024 – but are not going to receive the entire £10m as profit, as the Citizens are entitled to 30% of the fee.
A second Ipswich Town supporter did not quite get the memo about the 30% cut Manchester City will take, but posted: “£10m profit for a bloke that downed tools mid April. Not bad business that Mr Ashton (Mark Ashton, Chairman).”
A third fan was pleased to see Delap move to west London on a personal level, wishing him well and hoping that he “smashes it” at Chelsea.
They wrote: “Ngl (not gonna lie) hope he absolutely smashes it! Our last club record fee was Tyrone Mings… shows how far we’ve now come. Onwards and upwards, glad it was done early.”
Elsewhere, a fourth Ipswich Town fan echoed that personal sentiment, writing: “Pleased for him, I think this is a good choice of club given his connections/play style. Absolute joy to watch over the last year, throw back to the strikers who I used to watch when first getting into the game. I really hope he retains that little arrogant/nasty streak.”
Furthermore, a fifth supporter opined: “Over the moon this hasn’t been dragged out all summer and (the) club has got this over and done with. That performance vs Chelsea at home… frightening.”
Last but by no means least, a sixth Ipswich Town fan said: “Good luck to him. Don’t understand any negativity towards him. He did well this year and earned this move. Chelsea is a good choice for him as he will play rotation with (Nicolas) Jackson, no doubt.
“Glad we did this deal early so it didn’t drag on through the summer.”
Liam Delap could already have a curse on him at Chelsea
The 22-year-old is a fantastic prospect, and we expect him to shine under Enzo Maresca, who has already coached him in the City Football Group academy at Manchester City to great effect.
| Coach | Games | Goals | Assists | Yellow Cards | Red Cards | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enzo Maresca | 22 | 27 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 1,910 |
However, Delap – who Newcastle United wanted – has taken the No.9 shirt at Stamford Bridge, which has often proven to be something of a poisoned chalice.
In recent years, the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Romelu Lukaku, Tammy Abraham, Gonzalo Higuain, Alvaro Morata, Radamel Falcao and Fernando Torres have worn the shirt, all struggling to emulate previously heroic strikers such as Didier Drogba at Chelsea.
Therefore, Delap has a curse he needs to break in order to shine for the Blues.
