Why Harvey Barnes signing for Liverpool is a disaster for City and Guardiola – TBR View

Liverpool are being linked with a move for Leicester City midfielder Harvey Barnes, in a move that could already have Pep Guardiola sweating ahead of next season.

The Mirror claims that the Reds are keeping a close watch over Barnes. The Foxes star has emerged as one of the key men for Brendan Rodgers this term, following a successful spell with West Brom last year.

Barnes has found the back of the net seven times for Leicester, adding a further nine assists to propel the Foxes to within a whisker of reaching the Champions League.

And although it was not to be in the end, on a personal level, Barnes couldn’t have asked for much more this season.

It makes sense, then, that Liverpool is looking at the 22-year-old. If there has been one thing missing at times for the Reds, it’s been depth in those wide attacking areas.

Mo Salah and Sadio Mane scored 37 times between them in the PL. Take those two out, and the goals seemingly dry up in those areas. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain did his bit with eight. But Xherdan Shaqiri and Adam Lallana only scored once, while Takumi Minamino has yet to really find his feet.

Perfect signing and one that will worry Pep and City

Adding someone like Barnes will give Liverpool that boost they need in the squad. Yes, they’ve won the league, but as mentioned above, they can be too reliant on Salah and Mane at times, especially in wide areas.

Barnes has proven already he can hit the net and provide. And at 22, he’s only going to improve further.

In addition, he can also play all three attacking midfield positions. With Adam Lallana out the door at Anfield, it would appear Barnes is ideal to replace him.

Pep Guardiola has the big problem of replacing David Silva this summer. Ferran Torres is expected to sign.

However, he’ll take time to adapt. Therefore, if Liverpool land Barnes, you could easily say they’ve already got one up on Guardiola and co before a ball has been kicked.
