'Why?': Gary Neville left confused after what Arsenal did on deadline day this summer

Gary Neville has been left confused by Arsenal’s approach to deadline day this summer.

Speaking with Jamie Carragher on The Overlap, the two pundits discussed Arsenal’s transfer window.

Neville made it clear that Mikel Arteta had highlighted one area Arsenal still wanted to strengthen weeks before the window closed.

The former Manchester United defender said: “I was just going to say, we asked Mikel Arteta on the first game of the season, Friday Night Football against Palace and we said to him ‘are you going to do any more business?’

“He said ‘yeah’ and we said ‘what area’ and he said ‘midfield’.

“Why did they wait until deadline day when they bid for (Douglas) Luiz? Why did they wait that three or four weeks?

“I thought midfield yesterday was the one area where they looked like they had more at times passing between the lines.

“I know Arsenal did really well in midfield but when there was a moment to open up the game, I know (Martin) Odegaard can do that, but I felt they did lack a bit in midfield.”

Neville confused by Arsenal’s deadline day business

Arsenal’s defeat at Old Trafford was the first time they had dropped points this season.

They remain top of the league, helped by the brilliant form of new signings Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Jesus has already been blowing away his teammates in training, and Erik ten Hag believes his players can learn from Zinchenko.

However, the Gunners have failed to bring in a defensive midfielder this summer and might now pay for it.

Thomas Partey has been first choice in that role under Arteta, but has already picked up an injury this season.

Partey can’t be relied for a full season given his injury record.

His back-up Mohamed Elneny is now also unavailable with a more serious injury.

It’s not a surprise that Neville has been left confused by Arsenal’s deadline day business, especially given these injuries.

Arteta was clearly aware the cover was needed, and the club failed to act quickly enough.

Arsenal worked hard to recruit Douglas Luiz in the final hours of the window, but discovered the risks of leaving a deal so late.

The Gunners also failed in their attempts to sign Brazilian Danilo, and never made a bit for Leicester’s Youri Tielemans.
