‘Why don’t they’: Pundit reckons Manchester United should sign £16m player from Aston Villa now

Manchester United’s goalkeeping woes are there for all to see.

Andre Onana, quite simply, hasn’t been good enough for the Red Devils this season. He’s made a number of high-profile mistakes, and there’s been plenty of talk about the Cameroon international being dropped or even replaced.

Speaking on Ben Foster’s Podcast, former England goalkeeper coach, Dave Watson, has been discussing Onana’s situation at Old Trafford, and he’s of the opinion that United need a more traditional shot-stopper rather than a playmaking goalkeeper.

Watson stated that United should go and get a traditional goalkeeper, naming Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez as the man he thinks the Red Devils should go after.

United should go after Martinez

Watson shared his verdict on what the Red Devils need and the £16m man.

“You look at those stats, and you think they’ve signed Onana to have someone to have the ball at their feet and start the play. What you actually need is what you had before, someone who can stop the ball going in the net, why don’t they go and get Martinez from Villa? He makes unbelievable saves week after week after week,” Watson said.

Martinez would be perfect

We have to agree with Watson here, Martinez could be the perfect goalkeeper for United.

The Argentine has shown at the World Cup that he’s constantly capable of stepping up in the big occasions, while he’s very much proven at Premier League level.

He’s not the world’s greatest with the ball at his feet, but he’s not a liability either, while his shot-stopping is brilliant.

Factor in that he’s a real leader at the back and his infectious personality will resonate with the Old Trafford crowd, and United could be onto a winner here.

Of course, getting Martinez out of Aston Villa won’t be easy, but if the Red Devils do want a new goalkeeper, he may be the man for the job.
