A number of Arsenal fans have given their thoughts on the report claiming Emiliano Martinez won’t be in the Gunners matchday squad today as transfer discussions with suitors continue.
According to a report in The Guardian from Friday night, Brighton have joined the race for the 28-year-old, who has also been heavily linked with Aston Villa, and have exceeded the Villans’ £15million offer.
Meanwhile, a report in The Telegraph from earlier on Friday claimed that Villa were close to finalising a deal with Arsenal for Martinez, who is expected to command a fee of up to £20million.
With speculation intensifying over the Argentine stopper’s future, both outlets claim he won’t be in Mikel Arteta’s squad as Arsenal head to Fulham in their Premier League opener.
Here is what some Gunners fans have been saying on social media:
Disgraceful decision. Emi better at every single aspect of the job.

Really is a crying shame that he seems to be off. Made himself a hero at the end of last season and really does love the club. Leno will do a job this season I’m sure but we’ll all be wondering what Emi could’ve done with a full season as Number 1…

I’m going to miss him. What a hero if he saves us, wins us two trophies and then leaves so we can fund a move for a midfielder to compete again. Nothing but respect for my king.

He’a a top keeper. Prime age. If Chelsea paid 70m for kepa, then why can’t we get at least 40m for emi ☹️? @EddieLongbridge please explain

Struggling to accept this 😭

Emi wants a number 1 position. He now knows he’s more than good enough. Arteta presumably, prefers Leno, so bye bye Emi
Could be a huge mistake.. we’ll see

Terrible decision – how do you drop someone who has played so faultlessly, winning big games? He’s better with his feet and on crosses then Leno

Very sad to see him go but we should go for £25m minimum.

Martinez, who has spent most of his Arsenal career as a deputy, excelled in the absence of first-choice Bernd Leno at the tail end of last season.
He helped Arteta’s side win the FA Cup at the start of August thanks to a 2-1 victory over Chelsea and followed it up with the Community Shield win over Liverpool.
However, speculation about Martinez’s future increased in wake of comments he made to Argentina’s Radio Continental last month.
“I showed that I can play, I need to play more games next season,” he said. “I want to establish myself at Arsenal and become first choice.
“If I don’t play, I’m going to move, I’m going to go where I play more.”
