Amidst a sudden ton of interest in Mathys Tel’s signature, Tottenham Hotspur fans will be hoping that they can pip their rivals to sign the Bayern Munich striker.

Tottenham want Tel, and whilst they aren’t willing to match Bayern’s asking price this month, which will be upwards of £40m, they would sanction a loan deal with an obligation to buy.

The striker actually made a surprise start for Bayern in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, but Tel then appeared to wave goodbye to home fans in attendance at full-time.

Encouraging signs for those who are hoping that both Daniel Levy and Johan Lange will back their manager before Monday’s deadline.

Ange Postecoglou is hamstrung by injuries in N17 right now, and his Tottenham side is desperate for added quality, which Tel would definitely provide.

Tottenham are in ‘direct talks’ to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich

That being said, German journalist Florian Plettenberg has just provided an interesting insight into Tel’s form in Germany after confirming that Tottenham were in ‘direct talks’.

The journalist also explained why Bayern fans are slightly put out by news that Tel is leaving, a 19-year-old who has a ton of potential.

Plettenberg said: “Right now there are ongoing talks. Mathys Tel, he is not a super talent. He is a very big talent but his performances in the last couple of weeks and months haven’t been that good.

“This is the reason why Bayern is open to letting him go. The first big and relevant update is that Bayern is very open not just to loan with an option to buy but also to a permanent deal, as I got the confirmation from close sources today.

“An exclusive update right now is that Bayern Munich and Tottenham have opened direct talks and negotiations.

“Tottenham are pushing for Tel at this stage. I cannot say if they will find an agreement but Tottenham have opened talks.

“He is a great character. 19 years old, he has learnt speaking German very fast. The fans love him, he was always gentle and friendly.

“He said hello to every guy who was working inside the club, who was working at the training ground, he said hello to every fan.

“The fans cannot understand why he will leave FC Bayern, but there is an understanding that he needs regular playing time.

“He is a fantastic guy, open minded, friendly, always smiling but he needs to choose the right club right now as this is a very important step in his career.”

Tottenham could have an understated advantage in Tel race

To sign Tel, Spurs are still competing against the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Fortunately for Spurs, they might be able to offer the France under-21 international something that their rivals can’t – regular first-team minutes.

Tel wasn’t keen on joining Chelsea earlier this month because he couldn’t envision a direct route into the XI under Enzo Maresca.

However, with all the injuries Postecoglou is contending with in north London right now, Tel could go straight into his side.

The Bayern striker is able to operate as a number nine or on the left, versatility which will be important once Postecoglou’s whole squad is fit.
