Tottenham Hotspur centre-half Toby Alderweireld was the subject of constant transfer speculation this summer, but his latest public comments spell encouraging news for his future in north London.
Although the Belgian defender was reportedly close to moving to Manchester United just a couple of months ago, it appears his situation at Spurs has improved markedly, according to the Evening Standard.
While on international duty, Alderweireld reportedly told the media that he was content with his life at Tottenham and was not fixated on his contract situation.
“Honestly, I am absolutely not thinking about it at the moment,” Alderweireld said. “I feel good, play a lot right now and, therefore, am happy. We shall see.”
These positive comments must delight Spurs fans, as the Belgian international is a crucial part of Tottenham’s defensive fortitude. The 29-year-old has played in seven of Spurs’ eight league matches so far this season, and was responsible for keeping three clean sheets and playing a role in five victories in his appearances.
Tottenham surely must activate Toby Alderweireld’s one-year contract extension shortly, as the experienced defender brings steel and composure to Mauricio Pochettino’s backline and needs to be kept in north London as long as possible.
