Jamie Vardy – Leicester City

Goals: 19

Minutes Per Goal: 143

Shooting Accuracy: 57%

Former non-league striker Jamie Vardy has encapsulated everything wonderful about Leicester City’s title charge and become the cult hero of a nation after a surprisingly magnificent season which has seen him become a regular in the England squad and contender for the Premier League’s golden boot.

Starting the season under the radar with just five goals in his previous campaign; where Leicester of course narrowly escaped relegation, Vardy shot to the top of the scoring charts with a stunning start to the season where he broke Ruud van Nistelrooy’s long standing Premier League record of finding the net in ten consecutive Premier League games. Vardy scored in eleven on the spin.

Thanks to his heroic run, Vardy led the way going into the New Year with 15 goals, but a downturn in fortunes in front of goal has seen the former Fleetwood man add just another four to his total since January. This is not because Vardy has lost form – he is still playing wonderful football – but more as a result of a change in mentality from Leicester’s opponents, who now recognise that the Foxes’ early season success; and particularly Vardy’s, came as a result of their blistering counter attacking football. Therefore, teams are now sitting much deeper to starve the England striker of the space where he caused so many problems.

Still, Vardy is one of Leicester’s two most important players, and his audaciously brilliant back-heeled goal for England and the Olympiastadion in the international break shows just how confident he still is in front of goal.

If Leicester are to win the league, then Vardy will surely chip in with a few more goals. Whether it’s enough to overhaul Kane is a different matter, but he’ll give it a good go.
