Paddy Madden
With 15 league goals so far this season, this ex-winner of the League One golden boot knows what it takes to fire on all cylinders consistently for the duration of a season. The only surprise is that Paddy Madden isn’t playing at a higher level at this stage in his career. As it is, Madden leads the line for Scunthorpe United who currently lie in 14th place in League One. During the 2012/13 season, Madden finished the campaign with 23 league goals (and therefore the Golden Boot) when playing for Yeovil. This included a goal at the Play-off final, an infamous strike in the history of Yeovil Town. Madden began the following season in the Championship, hoping to continue his form from the previous year. By January he was sold to Scunthorpe after failing to score a single goal. It wasn’t the fairy tale campaign for Madden, but that certainly didn’t dent his confidence. He continues to perform at League One level, and is once again in the running to become the league’s top goal-scorer.
Billy Sharp
At 30 years old, Billy Sharp has 155 career club goals to his name. This includes his total of 15 so far this season in League One. The Sheffield United striker is somewhat of a Football League veteran, scoring goals in League One and the Championship for over ten years. Despite a run of just a couple in his last seven games, Sharp has risen to the occasion several times this campaign. He scored the winning goals against Coventry, Scunthorpe and Port Vale to keep United just about in the Play Off hunt. He’s not only proving to his manager, but showing the league that he’s far from past his best yet.
These are the five current highest goal scorers in League One. They are all very different strikers, but one thing is for sure, they all know how to find the back of the net. It’s hard to look past the current joint leaders; Ajose and Armstrong, as the eventual Golden Boot winners. Although Armstrong has an extremely bright future ahead of him, my bet for the 2015/16 League One top goal scorer is Swindon Towns Nicky Ajose.
