The in-form striker in the league at the moment is Nicky Ajose. The Swindon Town forward is equal with Armstrong on 19 league goals at the time of writing; however Ajose has 10 goals in his last 9 games. In what has been a tepid campaign for The Robins so far, Ajose has found a partner in crime in Jon Obika; the duo scoring 29 league goals between them so far. The pair have become fan favourites at the County Ground, with Ajose showing no signs of stopping at 19 league goals. Perhaps most impressive is the timing of his strikes. Without Ajose’s efforts, nine points from games against Crewe, Shrewsbury and Blackpool would instead have been a solitary point. Therefore, Ajose has fired some much needed goals to help push Swindon away from the relegation zone.
Hot on the tail of the top two is Barnsley’s Sam Winnall. With 17 league goals, he’s very much in the race; however his recent form is not to be desired. Two goals in seven matches means Winnall is certainly not showing the same type of form as Ajose, but there is no denying his sheer talent. There’s a reason Championship side Leeds United made a bid in excess of £1 million for his services in January, and it’s the same reason that led Barnsley to instantly rebuff that offer. Currently sitting in 7th place, Barnsley have ambitions of making the play-offs. If they are to achieve that goal, then Winnall will no doubt be a key factor. His natural finishing and goal-scoring instinct means that Winnall will most likely be snapped up by a higher league club, regardless of whether he wins the Golden Boot or not.
