Fulham travel to Manchester City tonight in the League Cup, pitting the Premier League’s worst defence against its best attack.
A key question ahead of the match is who Slavisa Jokanovic will select in goal, as the answer will illuminate many questions surrounding Fulham’s fluid goalkeeping hierarchy.
Jokanovic has already used three goalkeepers in the Premier League this season, starting with Fabri, reinstating Marcus Bettinelli, and then recently favouring Sergio Rico against Bournemouth on Saturday.
Whoever starts between the sticks at the Etihad will give supporters a clear indication of who Jokanovic sees as first choice, yet could muddy the waters as to who is the established back-up.
Previously, Rico had played in the League Cup against Exeter City and Millwall, but now that the Spaniard appears to be on top of the pecking order, it is anyone’s guess who plays against the champions.
Will Bettinelli be handed the start to boost his confidence after being dropped right after penning a new contract? Or will Fabri get the nod after being frozen out of the team since starting the opening league matches back in August?
And perhaps Jokanovic will shock the Fulham faithful and select a wild card, picking 17-year-old U-23 goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond, who starred in Fulham’s 4-0 win against Norwich on Monday.
In all, instability and uncertainty surround the goalkeeping situation at Craven Cottage, and it is likely questions will continue well after tonight’s cup tie against Manchester City.
