Who will escape Premier League relegation come the end of the season?

There are just 11 games until the end of the Premier League season and with Chelsea all but guaranteed to win the title, the real intrigue is coming from the bottom end of the table. The relegation battle is looking more enthralling than ever this campaign, with at least seven teams locked in a fierce battle to beat the drop.

The picture has shifted in recent weeks and there are now three teams slightly adrift at the foot of the table. Things are looking bleak for Sunderland, Hull, and Middlesbrough, and it is mainly down to the form of their rivals. Sunderland are bottom, on 19 points, then Hull City have 21 and Middlesbrough are on 22, before you get to 17th placed Crystal Palace, who are three points clear of the relegation zone with 25 points.

But they are just one win away of returning to the drop zone, while Bournemouth, Leicester, and Swansea are all looking precarious on 27 points. There are sure to be plenty more twists and turns before now and the end of the season, and it is imperative than teams get points on the board in the next few weeks to strengthen their bids for survival.

The bookmakers now believe the three teams in the relegation zone will be there at the end of the season. Sunderland are now just 1/7 to go down and that sounds about right as six points is a big deficit to make up at this stage of the season, particularly for a team that concedes as frequently as Sunderland, while a BetDSI odds review shows they are underdogs for virtually all of their remaining games this season. But the Wearsiders have pulled off so many great escapes in recent years that you wouldn’t want to bet against them pulling it off again at those short odds, especially when they can count on the goals of Jermain Defoe.

Boro are 4/11 second favourites and Hull are 4/9 third favourites to be relegated. That is a miserable prognosis for the northeast of England, which would lose all three of its Premiership teams. Still, Newcastle are set to be promoted, although that would only make relegation all the more harrowing for Sunderland and Middlesbrough fans.

It really does seem as though those three will go down. Middlesbrough have been a great bet all season as they don’t score enough goals, and after a strong start, they have been slowly sucked into the drop zone. They have taken just two points from their last six games and that is relegation form. Hull improved a bit under Marco Silva and became harder to beat, but they have not invested enough in the squad.

There is still a good chance one of them will pull off an escape though, as that always seems to happen. Leicester have won back-to-back games since parting with Claudio Ranieri and they really do look too good to go down. Palace have also won twice in a row and have the firepower to beat the drop. Swansea have won four out of six and are in excellent form since bringing in Paul Clement. The ones that should be really worried are Bournemouth fans. The Cherries have slipped and slipped down the table after a disastrous 2017. They will take heart from a well-earned draw with Man Utd, but the defence has been a mess since Nathan Ake was recalled by Chelsea, and they look an interesting outside bet at 15/2.
