At one point odds-on favourite, the Oxford United manager now looks to be staying at the Kassam Stadium. It is easy to see why Appleton was linked with a move west, as Mark Ashton (former CEO of Oxford United) is now Operations Manager and tasked with finding Cotterill’s replacement.

Ashton has publicly ruled out Appleton, and that is of no heart break to many City fans, who despite his resurgence at Oxford, remember his poor spells at Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers.
