When it took just five minutes for Leroy Sane to open the scoring for Manchester City at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon, it seemed as though it could have been just another one of those afternoons for Arsenal fans. Kevin De Bruyne’s magnificent pass set the German through, but his lead was not enough.
With both sides producing some woeful defending, City’s sloppiness at the back allowed Theo Walcott the opportunity to poke the ball home before half-time to draw the scores level and give the Gunners hope.
It didn’t last long though, and a strike from Sergio Aguero only two minutes later meant that Pep Guardiola could relax as the Citizens went back in at the break with the scoreline on their side as their rapid attacking play meant that after hitting the post, Aguero found the back of the net in time before the game reached the halfway point.
More slack defending, this time from a set piece, allowed Shkodran Mustafi to score with a header which beat Willy Caballero before the hour mark when Mesut Ozil whipped in from a corner on what was a largely forgettable afternoon for the playmaker, who fluffed a great chance to seal a victory when Nicolas Otamendi’s mistake played him in on goal late on.
From that moment on, neither side looked happy to gamble and risk their point with their defences clearly not up to scratch and the final half hour saw the two sides cancel each other out as they were clearly reluctant to get forward in numbers and risk being caught on the counter as both had been earlier on.
