Who was the stand-out Southampton player at Euro 2016?

Southampton were the Premier League’s joint seventh-most represented team at Euro 2016 this summer, with no less than seven individuals representing their country at the highly anticipated tournament. With familiar faces playing for England, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Italy, supporters of the Saints were given a number of reasons to keep track of goings-on in France.

Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares will, of course, be delighted with their efforts at this summer’s European Championships with Portugal. Having failed to win a single game in the group game, they went on to win just a single match in ninety minutes, and still emerged as the tournament winners. Ultimately, this came down to impressive team spirit and resolute defending, which fell heavily on the shoulders of the impressive Southampton pair.

Elsewhere, Graziano Pelle had a mightily impressive campaign for Italy, during which he made four appearances and scored two goals, while creating a further seven chances for his team-mates. His imposing display against the Spanish proved particularly important and will remain a highlight for supporters of the Saint Mary’s outfit.

Shane Long’s Republic of Ireland and Steven Davis’ Northern Ireland team, both reached the first knock-out round of the competition, before defeats to France and Wales, respectively. The duo each made four appearances at the Euros, but failed to register a single goal or assist. Nonetheless, their efforts as a collective unit, in their respective sides, will be remembered for some time.

Meanwhile, England’s Fraser Forster, was forced to endure the tournament from the sidelines. Despite Joe Hart’s various mistakes, the Southampton man wasn’t handed the ‘number one’ spot by Roy Hodgson. His compatriot and Saints team-mate, Ryan Bertrand was afforded just one appearance, as he featured in the Three Lions’ 0-0 draw with Slovakia.
