Who should Arsenal recruit this summer?

It has been a turbulent season for Arsenal this campaign. Embarrassed by Bradford and battling against Bayern Munich, the Gunners have been sporadic in their results and play. The prominent and gaping feature has been the lack of a trophy, yet again. But who can Wenger bring in to change the club’s fortunes?

A solid goalkeeper forms the basis to a strong side they say and Wojciech Sczesny has failed to reach his potential. The red card at Euro 2012 has seemingly played on his mind and since he has not recovered. In my opinion, Wenger would be worthwhile looking for a solid goalkeeper.

Arsenal have been far from challenging from the league since Jens Lehman left. Rumours have emerged naming Simon Mignolet as a potential summer target. The Sunderland goalkeeper has been the Black Cats’ most consistent performer this year, he  certainly warrants a big move. Still only 25, he is relatively young for a goalkeeper.

Another option is Julio Cesar, but at 33, Mingolet seems the better long term option.

The defence has also suffered this season – it has been regularly found wanting. It lacks pace and authority, the North London derby epitomised this. The two goals conceded were down to the lethargic nature of the Arsenal back four.

Where EVERY Euro 2020 Squad Would Finish In The Premier League

Joleon Lescott is a player who would fit the bill, having become a fringe player at City since the arrival of Matija Nastasic. He can still offer a lot – his performances for England deserve some credit and whenever he has been called on for City, he has performed. As a financially viable target, Arsenal would do well signing him up.

Ashley Williams has also been discussed, the Swansea city defender has comfortably adjusted to Premier League football and at 28, he is still a worthy investment.

Arsenal have massively missed a presence in the centre of the park this term, against the top sides they have seen to be bullied. The absence of Abou Diaby has been all too telling – too many times we have witnessed sloppiness in Arsenal’s play.

Mohamed Diame is a player who could sort this problem out – a dynamic midfielder, he has brought both control and energy to West Ham’s midfield. A similar compromise to Yaya Toure, he is an ideal signing for a sporadic Arsenal side.

A younger player who could be sought after is Geoffrey Kondogbia. The Sevilla midfielder has been a perfect fit in their midfield since his arrival from Lens. With the potential to match Patrick Vieira, he would be a fantastic recruit.

Finally, Arsenal are in desperate need of a clinical striker next season. It could be argued, had Robin Van Persie stayed at the Emirates, Arsenal could have made a serious challenge for the title.

The addition of Podolski & Carzola increased the clubs creativity. Players that could fill the void have plied their trade at sides languishing near the bottom this season.

Loic Remy has been an instant hit since his arrival at QPR, with five quality goals in the Premier League this season. He has shown that he has the extra dynamism to give a top side like Arsenal the edge.

Christian Benteke is another name would be excellent at Arsenal. A very physical player, he brings something to the table that the club sometimes lack. He has recently stated he would be keen to join the London-based side: ‘Arsenal are the club I love, I’m not afraid of making enemies at Aston Villa by saying I love Arsenal”. This apparent love for Arsenal can only be a good omen for the Gunners.

Whatever action Arsenal take in the summer, the dominance of Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City will only intensify if they don’t catch up in their performance and consistency. A bad transfer window will lead to more pressure on Arsene Wenger. The club need to move fast to ensure success next season.
