According to the Daily Mirror, bitter rivals Liverpool and Everton are both tracking Lyon’s 21-year-old defensive midfielder Tanguy N’Dombele, who will face Manchester City in the Champions League tonight.
Ahead of this weekend’s Merseyside derby, it has emerged that the Toffees have watched the destroyer four times for the Ligue 1 outfit but Jurgen Klopp is also tracking his progress.
But which side needs him more? Despite a big-money midfield summer recruitment drive, Klopp arguably still lacks an out-and-out holding midfield player and that’s what N’Dombele could be at Anfield.
He has the energy and physicality that the German loves in his midfield players and at just 21, there is every chance he would greatly improve with his coaching methods.
On the basis of the report, it appears that how intensely Everton will pursue the midfielder depends on whether they can convince Andre Gomes to remain at Goodison Park beyond this season.
That said, N’Dombele does not have the artistry the Portuguese playmaker has and he would perhaps be more of a rival for Idrissa Gueye.
He could well be an upgrade in the future but with Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin both at Goodison already, do they really need a new holding player in the same way Liverpool do?
