Who is Vurnon Anita?
Yesterday, Vurnon Anita completed his move from Ajax to Newcastle United. The fee for the Netherlands international has not been disclosed but has been reported as £6.7m, he joins the club after signing a five year contract.
Anita came through the ranks at Ajax after his family moved to Holland from the island of Curacao. The 23 year old played most of his early matches at right-back for Ajax, but more recently operated as a midfielder. This is where he’ll most likely play for the Magpies
Last season he scored two goals in 33 league appearances as Ajax won the Eredivisie for the 31st time.
Anita was scouted by Ajax World famous youth system in 1999.
After 6 years he had made his way to the first team, making his Eredivise debut in a 3-2 loss against FC Groningen in 2006. That year he also participated in the KNVB Cup semi-final against Roda JC. Ajax went on to win the tournament.
The following season he made a second Eredivise appearance, he also made his European debut in the UEFA Cup.
Duuring the 2007-08 campaign Anita failed to make the Ajax first team whatsoever. However the season after, he played a total of 16 matches, mainly as a replacement for injured or suspended team mates.
Anita became a first team regular under new head coach Martin Jol in 2009. Because of suspension and injury to other players. He played mainly as a left back but Jol was satisfied with his performances and played him in this position for most of the season.
Anita went on to play in the KNVB Cup final against Feyenoord, winning the trophy for the second time in his career.
These good performances led to his debut for the Dutch national squad. However, he failed to make the side’s 2010 FIFA World Cup team.
The 2010-11 season started as the previous season ended with Anita playing most matches as a left back. Ajax managed to qualify for the Group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2005-06.
Because of the poor team performances during the first half of the season, Martin Jol left Ajax in December 2010 and was replaced by Frank de Boer. Anita was used in a defensive midfield role under the new coach.
Having established himself as a first team player in this position, he played in the majority of Ajax’s matches. The season ended with two finals against FC Twente. Ajax lost in the KNVB Cup but successfully Eredivisie championship on the last day of the league campaign with a 3-1 victory. It was a first league title for Anita.
Having signalled his intentions to leave Ajax this summer, Anita is now a Newcastle player. He has stated he wants to help the Magpies win trophies after his successful time with the Dutch club.
“I won almost everything in Holland so the step was not difficult to make. Now I think we can also win trophies with Newcastle and it’s time to do that,” Anita told the club’s official website.
“In the Premier League especially, every game is tough so it can help me also to grow in my football skills.”
Anita will wear the number 8 shirt for Pardew’s side this season.
