Who is Vitolo, Chelsea’s £35million target from Sevilla?

Chelsea could be set to rival Atletico Madrid as they prepare a move for Sevilla winger Vitolo, say The Mirror. Both clubs would likely be forced to activate the release clause of the Spanish international, which is currently set at £35 million.

Who is he?

A 27-year-old winger who is capable of playing on either flank, or even centrally at times, Vitolo has 11 caps to his name since making his international debut in 2015. The attacker has three titles to his name after winning the Europa League with Sevilla on three separate occasions.

Where has he been?

Vitolo started his career with his local side Las Palmas when the Canary Island outfit were still in the second division of Spanish football. The winger gradually worked his way onto the scene in his three seasons at the club but his impressive form in 2012/13 earned him a move to Sevilla for just under £3 million.

Since joining the Andalusian team, Vitolo has continued his progress with ongoing improvements. Now, he has established himself as one of the team’s key players and one of few to remain loyal despite suitors from elsewhere. His form has earned him a breakthrough into the international scene with the Spanish side and he could now earn a move to the Premier League too.

What’s his style of play?

The number 20 will fit in well at Chelsea with his style of running down the wing before cutting inside, preferring to play short passes and make mazey dribbling runs rather than cross the ball into the box.

Strong in possession, Vitolo is not easily pushed off the ball either and he has enough pace to threaten defences with his neat footwork. However, he is not the kind of player to run rings around full-backs, as an Eden Hazard or Pedro might, and instead prefers to blow defenders away with his strength and power.

What does it mean for Chelsea?

Vitolo would add strength in depth up-front for Chelsea, particularly in the wide areas. Whilst Willian did provide cover for Pedro and Eden Hazard last season, there were few other options and Antonio Conte was left with no other choice but to stick with Eden Hazard, in particular.

With the Belgian set to miss the start of the season with an ankle injury, Vitolo could start the season as first choice. It’s unlikely that his arrival would force any sales, but the potential departures of Loic Remy, Michy Batshuayi or Diego Costa could go some way to funding the purchase.
