Who is Bruno Amorim, the Portuguese starlet close to joining Manchester United?

Jose Mourinho has already made three high-profile summer signings – but his business in the market is not yet done. According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are poised to complete the permanent transfer of Portuguese youngster Bruno Amorim, who impressed Mourinho during a recent trial at the club’s Carrington training complex.

Amorim is largely unknown in this country but the teenager has been on United’s radar since last year when he broke into the first team at Oliveirense, who compete in Portugal’s second tier. Standing at just 5ft 5in, Amorim is a diminutive forward who is capable of playing in a variety of attacking positions. Pace is his key asset and Amorim is expected to link up with United’s Under-23 squad with a view to progressing into the senior squad.

With new recruits Victor Lindelof, Nemanja Matic and Romelu Lukaku now settled in at Old Trafford, Mourinho has stolen a march on his title rivals by significantly strengthening his squad with his top three transfer targets. It is interesting to see that he has one eye on the future, too. Mourinho has been criticised in the past for relying on spending big money to win silverware instead of blooding young talent.

But his trust in teen sensation Marcus Rashford, who turned in an impressive performance in United’s Premier League 4-0 demolition of West Ham United, showed that he is prepared to give youth an opportunity. While Amorim is not expected to challenge for a first-team spot in the near future, Mourinho and his coaching staff clearly see potential in the Portuguese starlet and believe he could develop into a useful player.
