Who is Liverpool’s £25m target and Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa?

French outlet Foot Mercato have provided one of the surprises of the transfer window by suggesting that Liverpool could test Atletico Madrid’s resolve with a move for forward Angel Correa. They claim that Atletico are reluctant to sell, due to their current transfer ban, but may be tempted by a £25 million (28 million euros) bid for the winger.

Who is he?

A 22-year-old forward, Correa usually features on the right wing, but can play anywhere across a front three. Usually on the right, he can also play as a shadow striker or an out-and-out centre forward and has also played on the left at times in his career. The Argentine international has found himself in and out of the national squad but has earned eight caps to date, scoring one goal.

Where has he been?

Correa made the breakthrough with San Lorenzo in Argentina, scoring 12 goals in 57 games for his side as they won the Copa Libertadores in the second of his two seasons with the historic club. That came after an impressive debut season saw him score four in 11 in 2012/13, only improving as time went on.

That earned him a €7.5 million move to Spain in 2014 and he has continued to come on leaps and bounds. Since joining he has seen more involvement in each passing season under Diego Simeone, also increasing his goal and assist return at the same rate

What’s his style of play?

The Argentinean is a keen dribbler of the ball and often looks to make long runs on the ball, leaving La Liga defenders looking foolish as he whizzes between them. His style of little flicks, as he makes his way through teams, is at times a joy to behold.

Preferring to play in and around the box, Correa can often be caught cutting inside from wide positions and looking to either take a shot at goal himself or set up others, with his final ball one of the best in the Atletico squad thanks to his vision and range of short passing in the box.

Something that will appear to Klopp is his desire to work hard, often employing a pressing style, even under Diego Simeone, whose sides often prefer to sit back and absorb pressure, rather than press high up the field.

What would his arrival mean for Liverpool?

Correa would simply provide competition for the current options. At 22 years of age, he has room to improve and is still something of a raw talent. Training alongside the likes of Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho would only help him to develop and achieve his full potential.

The only doubt over whether Liverpool may make a move is that they may feel he is not yet needed, given that Mohamed Salah has already signed in this transfer window. That could see their interest delayed until January or beyond.
