Ready for a return to management after a season out of the game since quitting as England boss, his impressive record operating on a shoe string budget is bound to appeal to Southampton bosses as they look to compete once again without splashing the cash.

An astute tactician, Hodgson has also shown his ability to bring young players through the system and into the first team, something he even continued with England. Possibly not the most exciting of appointments, but certainly a reliable one.

Hodgson has not had a high profile failure to his name to date in management, even managing to drag England along for a few years as their downward spiral of decline really kicked in, but Saints fans will know exactly what they’re getting if Hodgson is appointed.
