An ex-Premier League winner still out of a job after leaving Leicester, Ranieri would represent a change in style. Many of Claude Puel’s critics have come from his defensive style, something which Ranieri is only likely to continue if he were in the Saint Mary’s dugout.

However, there can be no questioning of his recent success and it’s clear that a defensive re-build is what’s required. If Virgil Van Dijk does leave this summer, with Ryan Bertrand potentially following in his footsteps, that will leave only Cedric Soares and Maya Yoshida as regular first team defenders in the squad. Rainieri could be the man to strengthen in that area.

The Italian has a point to prove after his sacking at Leicester, but there is no reason to believe that he could not return Southampton to European football and then help them to excel in the way that the Foxes did under Ranieri this soon.
