Mentioned by the Express as the club’s dream appointment, it would be an ambitious move to bring the ex-Borussia Dortmund boss to Southampton only weeks after he left the German club, having secured their Champions League place for next season and won the DFB Pokal.

Tuchel has developed a reputation as one of the best tacticians in the game with his flowing attacking style, and is also known for his strong record of developing players through the club’s youth system which will appeal to the Saints given their history of putting trust in youth.

However, Tuchel does also have a history of rubbing people up the wrong way, from members of his squad to people in the boardroom, and may be reluctant to drop down to a side without European football so soon after leaving a team in the Champions League and fighting for league titles.
