Report: Move for 'special player' is likely to cost Arsenal between £40-50m; club yet to establish contact over transfer

A move for Brighton defender Ben White is likely to cost Arsenal between £40m and £50m, according to The Athletic.

The publication is claiming that the Gunners are preparing a move for the England international.

However, it thought that there has been no club-to-club contact between the two parties over the ace.

Despite the heft price tag, the value is likely to be insurmountable for the north London giants.

White was called up to England’s Euro 2020 squad as a replacement for the crocked Trent-Alexnder Arnold.

TBR View: White move a horrible transfer for Arsenal

This summer’s transfer window requires a massive overhaul for the Gunners.

They were in dire straights last campaign, finishing eighth in the Premier League and without European football.

However, centre-back is a saturated position for the club.

Rob Holding, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Pablo Mari are the club’s options in defence.

It makes a move for White pretty pointless from a Gunners point-of-view.

Plus, there is no justification for spending between £40m and £50m on a decent defender.

When you spend so much on a target, you’d expect him to start every single game. However, with the options available to Arteta that simply won’t be the case.

Despite his England call-up, his performances weren’t to the point where you’d call him Brighton’s best player.

He averaged mid-table with regards to defensive statistics and completed just 83.2% of his passes per game.

There needs to be a priority to sign an experienced defender with David Luiz leaving. The team need that leader, who can shepherd the players on and off the field like the Brazilian did.

But spending close to £50m on a young star, who isn’t even a guaranteed starter is pure madness.
