Reports suggesting Mourinho is set to clear out the United squad before the season begins have been flying around, following the conclusion of the media frenzy, that was Paul Pogba’s arrival. Prominent names in the ‘wielding of the axe’ lists are Daley Blind, Marcus Rojo and Phil Jones, meaning that the Portuguese manager may need more defensive cover.

The 22-year-old had a stellar season for Monaco last term and is well-known by Mourinho, who saw enough potential in him to give him his debut, and only, appearance for Real Madrid. The Brazilian is predominantly a right-back, of which United are lacking in depth. Luke Shaw and Borthwick-Jackson seem adept in covering the left side next season yet faith in Darmian and Antonio Valencia is likely to be tested.

Both the United boss and Monaco left-back share the same agent in Jorge Mendes and it is hard to deny the power agents have these days. As a specialist right-back, Fabinho would add a goal presence – he scored six last season – and could prove to be the final part of Mourinho-United jigsaw.
