Raphael Varane
With Mourinho’s youth record being slated as he joined the club, the Portuguese pointed to Varane as one of the world-class young talents he’d brought into a first-team picture during his career. The Frenchman, since Mourinho’s exit from Madrid, has failed to kick on, with the experience of Pepe and Sergio Ramos keeping him out the Champions League winners first team.
After also missing the European Championships in his home country, Varane may feel he has lost time to make up for and acknowledge he can’t be sitting on the bench for another season, especially as he has been tipped to become the world’s best centre-back.
Pushing for the exit door, Mourinho could be his saviour. United have the cash on hand, even after the Pogba deal, and are also likely to recover some outflow from players exiting the club. Currently Eric Bailly and Daley Blind have been partnering each other at the back. However, Mourinho would undoubtedly prefer a robust centre-back, over a ball-player.
Varane is a defender that can be both robust and a ball-player, and it wouldn’t be a long shot to suggest that he could replace Blind come September. Reports certainly suggest a deal could happen.
