Which of these two midfield superstars should Manchester United sign?

Summer spending at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho began last week when they announced the signing of Eric Bailly.

The 22-year-old defender arrived from Spanish side, Villarreal for a reported £30 million and will certainly not be the last signing Mourinho brings to Old Trafford in this window.

Defensively, the Red Devils were quite strong last season, but United fans will be expecting an instant title-challenge and the Portuguese manager probably doesn’t want to put his faith in Daley Blind who is naturally a midfielder.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Money is no object at Old Trafford and with Zlatan Ibrahimovic set for a medical at the club in order to strengthen their attack options, the midfield is surely set for some improvement.

Two names that have been linked with United are Paris Saint-Germain’s Marco Verratti and Leicester City’s relentless N’Golo Kanté.

Both Kanté and Verratti won the league title in their respective divisions, but there is no doubt that under Mourinho, Manchester United are set to return to the top of European club football.

Here we take a look at the pros and cons of the two talented midfielders and analyse who would be the better choice to shoot United back to the top…

N’Golo Kanté

The defensive midfielder is currently playing for France at Euro 2016 and in his country’s first game of the tournament against Romania, Kanté re-emphasised why the top clubs in Europe are after him.

The former Caen player lit up the Premier League last season for Leicester, not through outstanding skill or being prolific in front of goal, but through his fantastic ability to protect the defence.

Kanté was pivotal to the Foxes’ title-winning season as he showcased a superb ability to read the game and break up their opponents’ play.

At just 25-years-old, Kanté has years of his playing career ahead of him and so will be extremely appealing to Manchester United.

Mourinho is known for demanding 100% effort from his players due to his emphasis on a strong defence, and Kanté typifies that kind of positive attitude.

The bottomless pit of transfer funds at Old Trafford will not be necessary as the PFA team of the year midfielder has a £20 million buyout clause.

Mourinho will no doubt be looking for new recruits in midfield and Kanté would provide tireless energy for turning defence into attack in an instant.

Whilst Kanté is continuing his impressive form at the European Championships, he has only proven himself for one season, which could deter Mourinho from signing him immediately.

However, the midfielder is clearly talented and United fans will be hoping their new manager will snap up this incredible talent before one of their Premier League rivals does.

Marco Verratti

The PSG midfielder is less defensively minded than Kanté, but has an excellent range of passing to add to his armoury.

Verratti has been compared to Italian legend Andrea Pirlo, and at just 23 years of age, would be a fantastic but expensive investment for United.

It has been reported by many news outlets that Mourinho is planning a £79 million swoop for the Italian and so would be considerably more expensive than Kante.

Many top European clubs admire Verratti and he would be a fantastic signing for United because with Michael Carrick surely over the hill and rapidly approaching the end of his career, the club are in need of a new player that can unlock the toughest defences.

Verratti has fantastic vision, technical ability and has been a crucial to PSG’s success in recent years. Therefore, anything short of a large fee probably would not persuade the French giants to part with the diminutive Italian.

Whilst it is unlikely that PSG will let Mourinho take one of their most prized assets, the Verratti may be tempted to follow Ibrahimovich from the French capital, to Manchester in search of a more competitive league.

Who Could They Replace?

Last summer, Louis Van Gaal signed Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Daley Blind for United, but all three may find themselves on their way out.

Blind was deployed as a centre-back under Van Gaal but Mourinho could replace him with Kanté who would provide more intensity and defensive ability.

Schneiderlin on the other hand, just appeared to be out of favour under the previous manager and whilst he is no doubt talented, the Manchester United shirt seemed to carry too much of a burden. The Frenchman may well find himself on the fringes again next season.

Schweinsteiger is merely too old to adhere to Mourinho’s demands. Verratti has a far more impressive range of passing and Kanté has energy in abundance.

If Jose Mourinho is able to sign either of these players, they would be fantastic additions. Kanté would provide protection and energy for his young defence and Verratti can produce a single pass that unlocks a defence.

It will however be tricky for United to bring in either midfielder, for both of their respective current clubs set to play in the Champions League next term.
