Which of these three star midfielders should Southampton replace Victor Wanyama with?

Southampton’s Kenyan defensive midfielder, Victor Wanyama, looks set to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with the lure of Champions League football being too much to resist for the player who scored against Barcelona in Celtic’s emphatic victory five years ago.

With Wanyama looking to be out of the door, Southampton will be looking for somebody to fill the void, as although they have players like Jordy Clasie who can play in the defensive and central midfield position, it never hurts to have back-up. With the money they are likely to receive for Wanyama, the South Coast outfit will be able to bring somebody new in.

Over the next few pages, we look at the best three options for Southampton this season. Leave your thoughts on the selection in the comments below, and perhaps suggest someone who we have missed out.

Axel Witsel

The 27-year-old Belgian is one of the most important men to Marc Wilmots’ EURO 2016 side, and is extremely versatile, being able to play through the centre of midfield, in front of the back four or at the tip of a diamond providing support for the attacking players.

Since joining Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2012, Witsel has found the net 15 times, which is quite impressive considering he doesn’t usually play far up the park.

With great passing ability, strength to hold off his man and plenty of European success, Witsel would be an asset to the Saints’ midfield and would undoubtedly help Southampton in the Europa League next season.
