Out: Jesus Navas
Jesus Navas has been a great servant to the club no matter what role he’s been asked to play. However, the fact of the matter is that he’s simply not good enough to continue any longer in the side. He provides width to the formation, but other than that he’s a very one dimensional player. 90% of the time, he’ll take it down the line and cross it, which has provided plenty of chances, but in both a Pep system and the Premier League in general, one must be more versatile. A more dangerous right-winger must be brought into the side in order to provide a scoring threat from both sides of the field, something that the last three treble winners have had.
In: Lorenzo Insigne / Hakan Calhanoglu / Sadio Mané / Lucas Moura / Willian
Guardiola will no doubt be looking for a scoring threat on the right wing. He brought in Douglas Costa to replace the constantly injured Franck Ribery and the previously unknown little Brazilian has been catapulted into the adoring eyes of the football public. Though it would be fantastic for the Citizens, Guardiola will most likely not be successful in bringing over key players over from the Bayern squad. However, not all hope is lost. Lorenzo Insigne has been on the cusp of elevating himself to the level of the european elite for a few years and is now seemingly doing so. With eleven goals and eleven assists in a high flying Napoli side, Insigne has impressed many this season. With pace, solid dribbling ability, and an eye for a pass, Insigne could be a great addition to Pep’s new team.
Sadio Mané is another player that should be looked at for the new season. Many in the Premier League are well aware of his talents and it came as a shock to many that he didn’t move over the summer to a bigger club. The only issue with Mané is that he has had a bit of an attitude problem this season, specifically with his coach Ronald Koeman. The issue has now seemingly blown over and the Senegalese winger looks to be getting back to his best. He’s a very direct player and likes to shift in and out of the different pockets up front but does a good job staying put as well. Mané will have to learn to stay put to one side if he is to transition over to Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s three P’s philosophy of position, possession, and play doesn’t allow for wandering forwards, but the talented forward is only 23 and has the potential to be great.
Lucas Moura is another 23-year-old who could fit in well under Guardiola. The Brazilian has a wealth of experience playing at the highest level of European competition with PSG despite his relative youth, and has the quality to make a real impact at City.
Hakan Calhanoglu would be a stretch at right wing, but he’s certainly a player that should be considered. The talented Turk is able two work with both feet and is considered one of the best set piece specialists in Europe. His time at Leverkusen will surely allow Pep to be familiar with his talents. One to look out for.
Willian; another Premier League stand-out, is the perfect role playing winger for the Pep system. He has a brilliant understanding for intricate passing plays and his work rate, both offensively and defensively, is very high. He’s been the standout player in a sub-par Chelsea season and if the the London club don’t finish in the top four this season, which is looking increasingly probable, we could see a mass exodus of players leaving. Chelsea may not want to sell their best players, but in turn may be forced to in the summer. Diego Costa, Fabregas, and Oscar certainly didn’t cover themselves in glory by playing like a Sunday league team just to get Mourinho out of a job, and it’s with that loyalty that they’ll probably leave the Bridge if top four isn’t secured. Willian isn’t part of the group of Judas Escariots, but there will be no reason for him to stick around if the majority of quality players leave.
