Sergi Canos
Sergi Canos has been a name that Liverpool fans have kept a close eye on ever since his move to Melwood at the age of 16 in 2013. Seemingly destined for great things as he was a product of the Barcelona academy, Canos had spent many of his development years playing for Liverpool’s U-21 and U-21 sides, rather than gaining experience of first-team action away from the club. This trend was bucked in 2015/16, and the Spaniard has grown massively because of it.
Loaned out to Brentford, the 19-year-old made 21 appearances for The Bees in all competitions, scoring seven goals and notching up four assists along the way. Following the end of the Championship season, Canos returned to Anfield and was granted ten minutes of action in Liverpool’s last Premier League game of the season against West Bromwich Albion.
With a dearth of intricate attacking midfielders in their ranks, a wide-man with the quality of Sergi Canos could go far under Jurgen Klopp as the German looks to redistribute the positions covered within the squad. The returning Lazar Markovic may also fancy his chances, but he must show a change in attitude towards English football should he want to succeed at Anfield, something which Canos has displayed no shortage of in his time at Brentford.
The Spaniard’s contract still has a year to run but with Canos having shown his capabilities at a first team level in the Championship for a side that have performed admirably well, Jurgen Klopp must surely be keen to tie him down to a longer deal. There are rumours of disparity between Liverpool’s offer and the player’s demands, but with this still being the early stages, there is a long way to go in the process. Judging by a tweet he made after the game against The Baggies, Canos certainly seems excited about his future at Liverpool, and this will help to endear him to the Anfield faithful. There will hopefully be a great deal of matches for The Reds next season, and Sergi Canos could find himself being used fairly frequently as an option off the bench.
