David Ornstein has shared what he has heard about where Arsenal plan to spend heavily in the summer transfer window.

The Gunners have made remarkable progress over the last few years. When Mikel Arteta arrived, the club found themselves in mid-table. But they are now very much in the Premier League title conversation.

Of course, there is no time for the Gunners to sit back and admire what they have achieved in the last couple of years. With Manchester City and Liverpool also challenging for the title, Arsenal need to also think about what is next.

David Ornstein says there’s an expectation Arsenal will spend heavily on youth players this summer

The January transfer window saw Arsenal refrain from making any further signings. So there will be some intrigue over what exactly the club have to spend in the summer window.

It remains to be seen whether they can make any more marquee signings in the mould of Declan Rice and Kai Havertz. But it does seem that the Gunners do plan to make a big effort to bolster their academy ranks.

Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, David Ornstein suggested that there is an expectation that Arsenal will focus a lot of their attention on signing younger players.

“There’s a word in the industry that Arsenal are preparing to spend quite heavily on youth players this summer for the first time in a long time, or maybe ever in terms of significant spend,” he said.

Gunners right to act while on top

Unfortunately for many clubs, signing bright young talents is now so important when trying to compete with some of the richest sides in the world.

Arsenal have been prepared to spend large sums on key players. But they have now built a squad full of players who will hit their peak in the next few years.

With that, it makes sense to work on the next crop coming through while things are going so well. And if that helps Arsenal find their next Gabriel Martinelli, then it could prove to be another masterstroke from the club.
