Crystal Palace’s goalscoring woes are not a new problem; Roy Hodgson’s side were struggling for goals when Christian Benteke was fit to play, so it’s little surprise that those issues have continued in the Belgian’s absence.
Hodgson knew he inherited a side short on goals and that’s why he spent £9m in the January transfer window to secure the services of Alexander Sorloth from Midtjylland.
The move has not worked out as planned, even when Benteke was struggling last season, Sorloth was kept on the bench and the situation has not improved this time around.
Hodgson has moved Jordan Ayew ahead of Sorloth in the pecking order and would rather use Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend in attack as well.

So when will Hodgson finally put his faith in his £9m man? Palace are in dire need of an alternative approach because they simply cannot score enough goals right now.
There is no doubt that Sorloth has been underwhelming and his contribution would not earn a spot in a functioning frontline; but Palace don’t have one right now.
Perhaps he needs some faith from his manager – and Hodgson was willing to stick with Benteke through thick and thin last season – and a run of games to get his sharpness and confidence up.
The attributes that made Hodgson sign Sorloth can’t have just evaporated; he clearly viewed him as a good fit for Palace and now is the time to gamble.
