Gary Neville has told the Sky Sports podcast that he believes that since leaving Liverpool Raheem Sterling has really become a ‘high quality’ player.

Neville has now admitted that when Sterling was at Liverpool he felt that the winger was quite erratic in his play, especially in the final third.

However, Sterling is now regarded as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attackers and has proved his quality at Euro 2020 with England.

And Neville thinks that Sterling’s development since leaving Liverpool is testament to Pep Guardiola’s coaching skill.

“He has been a key player [for England],” Neville said. “Raheem is someone who at Manchester City in these last three or four years has basically torn it up.

“His goals, assists have got to a level of real high quality for England and Manchester City.

“It’s a level where when he was at Liverpool you might have viewed him as inconsistent and erratic in the final moment.

“But with the work that Pep has done with him at Manchester City, there is no doubt now that he has become someone who plays on the left hand side.”

A star turn

Sterling was only a youngster when he was playing for Liverpool, but the signs were there that he could turn into a star.

That is part of the reason why Liverpool fans were so annoyed when Sterling seemingly decided his future was better served elsewhere.

His decision appears to have been vindicated, given the progress he has made at City.

However, his future at the Etihad Stadium is not as certain as it once was now.

Sterling lost his place as a permanent starter for City towards the end of the campaign, and there have been some suggestions that he could be sold this summer.

His performances at Euro 2020 have been a reminder of Sterling’s quality though, and that may just convince City that the best option would be to keep him around.
