What’s now going to happen with Alan Varela after late links to Liverpool

There are always twists and turns on transfer deadline day, and this summer’s deadline day is going to be no different.

We’ve already had a lot of movement and rumours on Friday, and, as ever, Liverpool have been at the centre of a lot of speculation.

The Reds were linked with a late move for Alan Varela on Thursday evening, but the links to Varela were quickly played down.

Liverpool are apparently not in for Varela, and now, according to Cesar Luis Merlo, something different is going to happen with the Porto midfielder.

Alan Varela set for a new deal

According to the journalist, Varela is now set for a new deal at Porto instead of a transfer to Liverpool.

Varela will be offered a new contract, but whether or not he ends up signing this deal remains to be seen.

Varela was apparently a target for Liverpool earlier this summer with Michael Edwards said to be a big admirer of Varela.

Steve Kay shared just how much Liverpool like Varela a few weeks ago.

“He’s a really good player. They see him as the player to play next to his fellow countryman Alexis Mac Alliser who they want to play further forward,” Kay said.

“Yeah look this is the guy they want to bring in as the number six. Argentinian under 23 international Alan Varela. Last year they were linked with him. Michael Edwards and Arne Slot, from what I’m told today, they love this player.”

Liverpool still need a midfielder

Liverpool won’t be getting Alan Varela on deadline day, but the reality is that they still need a midfield player.

The Reds missed out on Marin Zubimendi earlier this summer, and, as of yet, no alternative has been signed.

With just over 12 hours to go in the transfer window, Liverpool still have time to get that midfield signing through the door, but whether or not the Merseyside club are able to get such a deal done remains to be seen.
