What West Ham now intend to do after Kurt Zouma’s failed medical

As part of his changes in east London, Julen Lopetegui has decided that West Ham United captain Kurt Zouma is not part of his plans moving forward.

West Ham signed Max Kilman from Lopetegui’s former side Wolverhampton Wanderers at the start of the summer, and seem intent on pairing him with Jean-Clair Todibo instead of Zouma.

Former Manchester United player Aaron Wan-Bissaka will now join that impressive back line too, expected to replace Vladimir Coufal.

That being said, Zouma had agreed to leave West Ham for Shabab Al-Ahli, who play in the UAE Pro League.

Although, as had been reported elsewhere, TBR Football understands that Zouma has failed his medical ahead of the proposed move.

West Ham have agreed to let Zouma leave for free this summer, meaning the wages on the last year of his contract would be taken on by the buying club.

But having failed his medical, Hammers fans will likely be questioning what will happen next for Zouma, a defender who seemingly is part of the club’s past.

That being said, TBR understands that talks are now ongoing with other clubs in the Middle East.

West Ham have made it clear to Zouma and his defensive teammate Nayef Aguerd that they can both leave the club in the coming weeks.

TBR also understands that West Ham’s technical director, Tim Steidten, is in talks with a number of clubs about a deal for the Moroccan international.

Of course, should the pair leave, that would leave Lopetegui with just three centre-backs for the season ahead.

Kilman and Todibo would be joined by Konstantinos Mavropanos, a talented trio but one that West Ham would surely have to then add too.

Aaron Cresswell is capable of playing as a left-sided centre-back in a back three, but would look a lot less effective playing centrally in a back four.

A busy summer for the Hammers, who are pushing hard on all fronts right now.

And after securing a deal for Wan-Bissaka, West Ham are attempting to complete another deal, one that could add better depth to Lopetegui’s attack.

But with just a matter of days until West Ham begin their season against Aston Villa, it’s becoming very clear how Lopetegui intends to improve on the David Moyes era.
