What the Italian national team are planning with Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori during the international break

During the international break it’s fair to say that Arsenal fans have their eyes pinned on two or maybe even three of the club’s players, praying they return injury free.

Given all the minutes he’s accumulated at Arsenal at the age of 23-years-old, supporters are always crying out for Bukayo Saka to get a rest during the international break, one that rarely comes.

That’s not quite the case with William Saliba, even though he’s also been loaded up with an awful lot of minutes at club.

Saliba’s France career has been frustrating to date, often overlooked by Didier Deschamps, but his excellent performances at the Euros should prove a turning point.

Arsenal fans have been willing Saliba to start for his country, even if they are also praying for his safe return.

And in addition to the duo, it’s also difficult not to become invested in Kai Havertz’s progress with Germany, who is also now vital in north London.

Riccardo Calafiori set to start against Arsenal teammate William Saliba for Italy

In addition to the three names mentioned above, Arsenal now have Riccardo Calafiori to watch closely whilst away with Italy, this summer’s flagship signing.

Mikel Arteta has been patient with Calafiori so far this season, partly because Jurrien Timber’s return to fitness has allowed him to do so.

But Arsenal may turn to Calafiori in the North London derby, a creative solution to Declan Rice’s absence because of suspension.

That being said, like many Arsenal fans, Arteta will be watching Calafiori closely during his two fixtures against France and Israel, this week and next.

According to Italian outlet Gazzetta, Calafiori is set to start against France, when he may face Saliba.

Calafiori is seemingly one of the first names on Italy’s team sheet, and the defender is set to start as the left-sided centre-back in a 3-5-2.

Calafiori could inspire a formation change at Arsenal

Whilst it seems unlikely, perhaps Arteta may actually be tempted to use Calafiori in a back three against Tottenham.

Arsenal are missing Rice because of the ‘ridiculous’ decision to send him off for a second yellow card against Brighton, and perhaps operating with one less midfielder could be a solution.

Calafiori could play alongside Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes in a back three, with Ben White and Jurrien Timber operating as full-backs.

As stated, Arteta is unlikely to ring the changes to that extent, but it’s certainly nice to have the option.

Just like Timber was intended to do so last season, Calafiori provides so much versatility for Arteta, an excellent signing all in all.
