What Steven Gerrard said about Liverpool target Mason Mount in 2021
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard previously labelled Mason Mount one of the best players in the country – amid reports that the Reds are now monitoring the Chelsea midfielder.
Mount has been outstanding for a few years now. But it seems that the Blues may face a fight to keep him at Stamford Bridge in the long-term.
The Guardian reported on Thursday that Mount’s contract expires at the end of next season. And talks over a new deal have been put on hold for the time-being.
Mason Mount praised by Steven Gerrard
Mount is away at the World Cup. And, while Chelsea are still optimistic about agreeing a new deal, he is attracting attention from elsewhere in the Premier League.
Liverpool are keen on the 23-year-old as they look to revamp their midfield ranks. And one person who will be delighted if he makes the move is Gerrard.
Gerrard was full of praise for Mount last December as Aston Villa prepared to face Chelsea in the Premier League.
“I’ve watched his progress – of course I have. He’s a big talent for the country. I’m a massive fan of Mason,” he said, as reported by the Express.
“He plays with a smile on his face. He can create, he can score and he’s already a European Cup winner so I don’t think he needs the likes of myself to big him up or praise him.
“But I must say I’m a fan.
“I think he’s only going to get better the more he plays and the more experience he gets.
“He’s already certainly one of the best players in the country. I have no doubts that he will be in the next squads for a lot of tournaments.”
It would appear that a lot needs to happen before a move to Anfield becomes likely. Chelsea clearly feel that they very much remain in the driving seat to keep the England international.
But obviously, they are up against it when it comes to time. Should the uncertainty continue beyond January, further doubts may creep in. And Liverpool may take encouragement.
He would undoubtedly have the potential to be an unbelievable signing for the Reds. He has 50 goal involvements in 119 games in the Premier League.
In comparison, Diogo Jota has 53 in 125 games in the competition. So it is certainly an impressive return from the Chelsea star.
Perhaps there is a chance that the two shall be teammates at some stage in the future.
