What some at Arsenal said last season about their title challenge

David Ornstein has shared what some in and around Arsenal were saying about their Premier League title challenge last season, which he confused him slightly.

Of course, Arsenal are in a phenomenal position right now. They sit third in the Premier League table. But no team in the division is looking more impressive at the moment.

Mikel Arteta‘s side have scored 31 goals in their last seven league games. And they have not dropped a point in the top-flight since 2023.

Some at Arsenal expected title challenge to tail off last season

Some may perhaps be expecting the Gunners to fall away after what happened last season. At one stage, Arsenal were eight points clear of Manchester City. However, they only won three of their final nine games and fell short of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Interestingly, it appears that Arsenal’s drop-off did not come as a surprise to everyone associated with the Gunners. Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, David Ornstein suggested that there were some doubts that Arsenal would get across the line – doubts which may no longer exist.

“There is something different about them this year. People I speak to at and around the club felt that last season they were going to tail off. I don’t know why. But that was their sense from working in and around the place. Perhaps the Saliba injury, which was crushing,” he said.

Gunners now a different beast

Arsenal will go top of the table with a victory over Brentford on Saturday. And Liverpool then face Manchester City, so at least one of their rivals is going to drop points.

The Gunners then face Manchester City before the end of March. That will certainly be a test of their title credentials. Should Arteta’s men win that game – and complete the double over the champions, no less – many will truly believe that the Gunners are on pole position to get across the line.
