Tottenham Hotspur have signed Xavi Simons after their move to land Eberechi Eze was hijacked by Arsenal.
Spurs were very close to signing Eze, and the player had even spoken to Thomas Frank. However, in the 11th hour, Arsenal came in and the England international chose them.
Tottenham fans have been furious about that in recent days, but everybody is delighted now because they have managed to get Simons from RB Leipzig.
Here’s what people at the club are saying about the deal.
Tottenham officials think Xavi Simons is a more value-for-money signing than Eberechi Eze
Arsenal agreed a deal with Crystal Palace to sign Eberechi Eze in a £67.5 million deal.
That is almost the figure of his release clause, which Tottenham were willing to pay as well just over a week ago.
Now, Tottenham have signed Xavi Simons for around £52 million, which makes him over £15 million cheaper than the new Arsenal number 10.
Spurs fans have been raving about the price on social media, claiming that they have got a better deal than their North London rivals.
That feeling is shared by the senior figures inside the club as well.
Dean Jones has revealed on Flashscore that ‘Arsenal may have landed their priority target, but Spurs officials were increasingly excited as they closed in on one of the most gifted young creative midfielders in Europe. And they feel it comes at a much better value price.’
Simons has signed a five-year contract at Spurs, and the deal includes an option to extend that by another two years, until 2032.
Tottenham’s plan after signing Xavi Simons
Simons is the third player to join Tottenham this summer after Kota Takai and Mohammed Kudus.
The North Londoners are significantly stronger now thanks to those arrivals, but Thomas Frank, who played a big part in the Simons deal, is not done.
The report claims that Tottenham sources are insisting that they want to sign two more players before Monday’s deadline – another creative attacker and a central defender.
TBR Football confirmed Tottenham’s interest in Manuel Akanji, while reports elsewhere have claimed that Spurs have enquired about Nathan Ake as well.
It remains to be seen who Daniel Levy will bring in before the window shuts.
