As Marcus Rashford wheeled off in celebration and looked up to the travelling Barcelona fans high up at St James’ Park, there may have been a few frustrated faces over at Manchester United.
Rashford scored his first two goals for Barcelona on Thursday night after sealing a season-long loan move from United after falling out with Ruben Amorim.
The two goals helped Barcelona beat a spirited Newcastle side in their Champions League opener, and the second was a stunning 20-yard shot that rifled past England teammate Nick Pope and slammed in off the underside of the crossbar.

United captain Bruno Fernandes was among those to react to Rashford’s stunner on social media, while Amorim has been told he perhaps made a mistake in letting Rashford leave.
Nicky Butt tells Ruben Amorim he should not have let Marcus Rashford leave Manchester United, ‘what have I done?’
Analysing Rashford’s performance on Match of the Day, Butt said that Rashford was back to his best with his display at Newcastle.
“We forgot about his talent at Manchester United but he showed he is a real top talent and back to the old Marcus,” said Butt.
“Ruben Amorim will be thinking ‘what have I done, I’ve let that go’ when Manchester United are struggling.
“You need to be loved and he needs an arm around him and when he has that he has shown what he can do.”
Marcus Rashford explains what Barcelona have given him that Manchester United couldn’t
Speaking to reporters at St James’ Park, Rashford explained how he has rediscovered the confidence to attempt shots like the one he scored against Newcastle.
“It’s more just the confidence to take the shot on,” he said. “The technique is something I’ve been practising and training since I was a young boy. This bit is the easy bit. It’s a great goal and I’m happy.
“Everybody dreams of winning the Champions League, now I’m with Barcelona, the dream is with Barcelona. I hope we can win the tournament.”
His new manager Hansi Flick echoed Rashford’s thoughts, and the sentiment of Nicky Butt, when he said: “These two goals will help a lot to get Marcus to the next step. It’s so important he has the confidence and feels OK. These goals are unbelievable for him for the next steps.”
