What Per Mertesacker said about Julian Draxler amid fresh Arsenal links

Arsenal are again being linked with a move for Julian Draxler.

According to L’Equipe, Paris Saint-Germain are now back interested in Gunners midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, and could offer the German as a sweetener.

The news comes after Guendouzi made a post on social media that suggested he was eyeing a return to the picture at Arsenal.

The youngster didn’t play after his incident at the final at Brighton, and has future has been in some doubt ever since.

Draxler , who reportedly cost PSG around £30 million (Goal), has been linked with Arsenal on several occasions in the past, but the 2014 World Cup-winner could finally end up at the Emirates Stadium in 2020, especially with Mesut Ozil only having a year left on his contract.

Interestingly, one man who has been rather a fan of Draxler is Arsenal’s current academy manager Per Mertesacker, who was all for him to join back in 2014.

The former Arsenal captain told SPOX (quoted by Goal): “We already have a little German academy here and I learned that German discipline and talents are very appreciated here (at Arsenal).

“We would love to welcome a player like Draxler, he is so young and already plays a huge role in Schalke and in the national team.”

TBR’s View – An Arsenal dilemma

Arsenal need to raise funds in order to sign Thomas Partey, and Guendouzi could be a means of doing that.

But there is the notion that Draxler could come in now to cover when Ozil leaves the club next year.

With Draxler out of favour at the Parc des Princes, Arsenal should not accept any straight swap – but should definitely consider demanding cash plus the player
